Passing The Juice Please

Passing The Juice Please

Want to increase your business’ presence online? We have a really juicy tip…literally. You need link juice.…what?

We understand. There are so many different SEO and digital marketing terms, it can be hard to remember them all. Link juice, also known as link equity, is one of the newer terms, and although it sounds a little funny, it’s a must-have for brand building online.

What exactly is link juice?

Link juice is a value factor determined by how much equity is passed from one website or social site to another. This value is passed via hyperlinks. The greater the value, the more search engines like Google will organically promote your page. “Juicy” pages are considered valuable and attractive in the eyes of Google’s algorithm. Think of it this way. People like to share juicy gossip. Google likes to share juicy websites.

How do I get link juice?

As we’ve discussed in a previous blog, you need a link building strategy. It’s not enough to just place hyperlinks in your content randomly. Those links should always direct the reader to a high-value, relevant site. As readers engage with these links, your link juice value factor increases.

Types of links that add value include but are not limited to:

  • Links to research sites: When mentioning facts, link to a site of reputable research – not a site that is someone’s opinion or contains flawed research or conspiracy theories. Good sites include WebMD, Mayo Clinic, StatsCan, trusted newspapers like those in the Great West Newspapers network (of course!), etc. Linking to non-trustworthy sites, or mistaking satire for a fact will damage your rankings. For example, as cheeky and on-point as some articles are from The Beaverton, claiming their stories are facts is not going to help your ranking.
  • Social media: Social media links quickly direct your readers to your Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc. pages. Not having to search for these sites adds value to the reader’s experience online, and you are rewarded with a higher juice link factor. You get bonus juice when people share your content on their social media channels.
  • Building up other sites: When you actively promote other websites that complement your own, your brand is seen as collaborative, which is good for building up your juice value.
